On March 21st, the super rad dudes of Legend Has It came to town with a bunch of other super rad dudes (Too Late The Hero). It was about as high energy as you can get – the blown circuit breaker and burnt out surge protector being proof enough, I think. Everyone had a great time, so we’re going to do it all over again. Legend Has It will be back at Galaxy on Monday, June 18th promoting their new record Escape from Vacationland, and we couldn’t be more stoked about it. Check out two brand new tracks below, as well as the Facebook event page for the show. If you like what you hear, be sure to purchase the tracks, then the album when it drops on May 15th, and hit that beautiful “JOIN” button and come hang out at Galaxy with them on June 18th.
Legend Has It Post New Tracks, Plan Return Trip to Galaxy CDs
Cincinnati’s Brian Olive Locks Down the Groove with Dr. John on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
CINCINNATI, OHIO – Dr. John’s new album, Locked Down produced by none other than favored Akron son Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys), dropped this week. Bonus: Cincinnati verve master Brian Olive, whose own Auerbach-produced Two of Everything won last year’s Cincinnati Entertainment Award for Album of the Year, plays bass on the record.
“Dan told me he was going to produce the next Dr. John album and asked if I’d play on it,” said Olive, via e-mail from his super-secret base camp in NYC – he’s playing a three-night stand, starting tonight, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in Dr. John’s backing band. “I just said, ‘When and where?’”
As part of the press rollout, the assembled company played Late Night with Jimmy Fallon this past Tuesday. And there’s Olive, all the way to the right of the line, jamming it. In case you missed it, click the photo below to watch the performance on the Jimmy Fallon website:
“I had a good time playing Fallon,” Olive related. “Meeting ?uestlove (of The Roots) was one of the better moments.”
We asked him how the East Coast scene compares to Cincinnati, what Southwest Ohio artists can learn from them, and what Brooklyn can learn from us.
“I’m working with some of the best artists in New York, so my perspective might be a bit skewed,” Olive said. “In general, though, it’s just a bigger place with more happening at once. I wish Cincinnati would broaden its mind and NYC would slow down for a minute!”
Dr. John’s Locked Down is now out on CD. The vinyl LP will be released on Record Store Day, Saturday, April 21.
To celebrate Cincinnati bands and local, independent record stores, Brian Olive will headline Salina Underground’s free Record Store Day Eve rock showcase at Northside Tavern on Friday, April 20, 2012, with special guests The Sweep and The Chance Brothers (who will also be releasing their debut CD that night). Doors at 8 pm, show at 9 pm.

Evan Weiss, who is Into It. Over It., is a good buddy of ours at TLH and we’re really stoked to have him play on our turf.
Joining him at the Galaxy show will be The Story Changes (from Dayton, another band we also love), Heartbreak Kid, Tall Tales (from Cincinnati & Louisville), and The Sound Museum (Cincinnati).

New Show Announcement: Xerxes with Mixtapes and more!
We haven’t quite come down from the high that was last night’s Stripped Down To The Bone Tour, but we kind of like it that way. So to keep up the momentum, we figured we’d announce another pretty awesome show.
On Friday, May 4 – Galaxy and The Lonely House, in cooperation with Title Fight Productions, will be playing host to No Sleep Records‘ Xerxes and Mixtapes. BAM! That’s what’s up.
If you’re not yet acquainted with either of these acts, we’re going to help you out with that. Stream Xerxes’ 2012 release Our Home Is A Deathbed and Mixtapes’ “I Accept That” from 2011′s Companions below:
ProTip of the Day: Accepting Credit Cards at the Merch Table
Dear bands who sell merch at merch tables,
If the only way people can buy your merch is to hand you some cash, please, please, please look into using Square. If you’ve never heard of it, Square is a tiny little credit card reader that plugs into your iPhone or Android device and allows you to accept credit card payments. And it costs you nothing to get one.
Why should you care about this? Because if the people who are watching your shows are anything like me, the odds are pretty good that they’re not carrying cash. And if they’re not carrying cash and you can’t accept credit cards, they can’t buy your stuff.
I promise, Square isn’t paying me to promote their service, I just really really really want to buy your merch. Please?
Rock on,
Alicia

One of our own, James Brooks, pointed out that PayPal is now offering smartphone card readers as well in its recently launched PayPal Here program. You’ve got options, people!

Take One Car, post-rockers from upstate New York, made the last stop of their tour at Galaxy CDs on March 18. They put on an awesome show, though it had been a tiring week of driving in their van, with a stop at SXSW. Joining them at the March 18 show was Sam Banta & The Fantastics (Cincinnati), The Kemps (Indianapolis), Frontier Folk Nebraska (Covington, KY), and Army Coach (Cincinnati).

My Name Is Drew Post Video of Galaxy Tour Stop
The awesome guys in My Name Is Drew (who are from Delaware) have just posted a video about the first part of their tour, which included a stop at Galaxy CDs for the show last Saturday with The Rebuilt Machine. The Lonely House’s Jared Bowers makes a cameo as well. An awesome time was had by all, and Jared noted, “I’ve never seen the bands at a show be so into each other’s sets. It was a blast.”
We’re looking forward to seeing My Name Is Drew again, but in the meantime, check out their tour video for some secondhand fun:
Live Video: Mansions & Young Statues
One of us at TLH, James Brooks, caught Mansions, Young Statues, and A Great Big Pile of Leaves at the Vernon Club in Louisville, KY last Friday and was able to get some video of the show. Check out Mansions’ “Blackest Sky” and Young Statues’ “Bumble Bee” below:

COVINGTON, KY – It’s Friday night and I’m in the dingiest, dirtiest, wannabe chucklehut in all of Northern Kentucky. A natural-fit Australian theme name is curiously spited by faux-Irish decor. Down basement stairs have I come, past malapropos, stained glass crucifix (sprung, one assumes, from some late cathedral’s demolition auction) into a gaggle of loose ends.
It’s nine o’clock and only a few diehards are in the joint; somehow, somewhere along the way the lone barkeep must have given up on ever again clearing beer bottles from tables. There’s a large puddle on the floor. A punker down the old K-hole has her Dachshund with her in the bar. It pissed the floor. At least, I assume it was the dog. More iconography: the Virgin hangs from the ceiling. She’s crying.
The Tongue and Lips headline tonight in the one-spot; The Harlequins are supporting on the later run. NCAA tourney basketball is on a big screen facing the stage. Everything about this is surreal. I beer it over. Why not? Later I’ll leave the bottle upside down. Continue reading
Salina Underground Pre-Show Prep: The Heights Music Fest
So, the Clifton Heights Music Festival is now . . . The Heights. Yes. Like the early ‘90s FOX “90210” spinoff. But without all the liposuction and melodrama. And instead of the usual October, post-Midpoint run, the two-day, three-block, multi-venue festival is now rocking the Cincinnati spring, Friday and Saturday, April 6 – 7!
Lineup is posted at http://www.theheightsmusicfestival.com/line-up; it’s a who’s who of Southwestern Ohio indie: The Minor Leagues, Josh Eagle, The Kickaways, The Black Owls, The Harlequins, State Song and more. All it’s really missing is a secret one-day Ass Ponys reunion show (by the way, does anyone out there have Chuck Cleaver’s phone number? He’s back from Austin now, right?).
And though we at the Lonely House are all of-age (don’t say “old” – we’ll kick you in the shins and steal your iPod), we’re excited for booze-challenged stakeholders under 21, who will benefit from the addition of ALL AGES shows at all five venues on Saturday afternoon (might we suggest you check out Evans Collective?). Not to mention, all tickets are priced at a legitimate steal:
- Friday Pass: $5 advance; $8 at door
- Weekend Pass: $10 advance; $12 at door
- Day Festival: $5 (all ages)
Tune in tonight at 7 pm Eastern for Salina Underground on WVQC.org (see the “Radio” tab up top? Click it, yo.) We’ll be discussing the Heights Music Festival with organizer Rome Ntukogu, of Far-I-Rome Productions. Might even have a few surprise guests for you. Tweet us questions: @salinaundergrnd or @lonelyhouseOH.
See you in Radio Land. That is all.
~Jonathan
